Robert Morris - Mechanical Whispers
I asked Robert
Morris of Mechanical Whispers to tell me something about himself and his artwork:
It's difficult for me to just sit down and start talking about myself. As an
artist, we spend so much time analyzing and putting our souls into our work that when we
have to actually sit down and put those very same things into words, sometimes we stumble.
I've always been interested in
art. Even as a child I would gravitate towards anything that would let me construct
something of my own creation that didn't exist 5 minutes ago. And it hasn't just been
drawing. I fully believe in using my hands and my imagination to explore all types of
media. To date, I've meddled with web design, video, music, animation, sculpture,
photography, and of course my drawings. I discovered scratchboard during my senior year in
college. Previous to that, my passion was pen & ink. I've always had a fondness for
high contrast black and white art and the beauty held within a single line. I drew my
inspiration from such artists as Albinus, Vesalius, Dore, and Durer. Once discovering
scratchboard, I knew I had found my medium of choice and would strive to perfect it.
My serious interest in the darker side of things also began in college. I had always been
interested in horror and fantasy, but in college I found all the resources at my disposal
for learning what had and had not already been done. And I found that the deeper I delved,
the more intrigued I was. The darker, the better. I wanted to push my own limits. I
realized that what I was trying to do was to depict something grotesque and horrifying in
a most beautiful and elegant way. It has been said that the work of H. P. Lovecraft is
impossible to depict visually. This is the sort of challenge I like... to attempt the
creation of something unspeakable. And this is a task to which I have only just scratched
the surface.
