| About Greg Blackman and Leon
McKenzie, the brains behind Halfmoon: We
met whilst I was working at the big Tower Records in Piccadilly Circus. Leon came in
looking for a particular Kung Fu classic, and I served him. We talked non-stop for two
hours straight about our many shared loves in the world of art. We've been like brothers
ever since. Slowly but surely,
Halfmoon evolved from a paper and pen fun project that we did in our spare time, to a
thing we knew could potentially rock the world!
Leon McKenzie (25) is responsible for plotting, and co-scripting Halfmoon and well as the
writing of two of the three journals (Daniel and Jon). Leon has just completed a 3 year
Bachelor Of Arts degree in film during which he has been working on Halfmoon
intermediately. Now that his degree is complete he will be teaming up with me to expand
upon the business parts of the Halfmoon site. Leon's theories on writing are many, but he
maintains a great respect for the talents at DC VERTIGO, especially Garth Ennis, Warren
Ellis and Grant Morrison, whom he worships as Gods. Leon's most basic aim in Halfmoon is
to instill in the reader a sense of unease, as if all the conventional rules of comicdom
have been abandoned; your favorite character may die half way through the story, and if
they die, they ain't coming back in three issues time! This way of thinking eventually
evolved into our tag line;'Comics without the safety net'. He draws from an extensive
knowledge of T.V and film when creating Halfmoon, aiming to make it a truly cinematic
experience.
Greg Blackman (25, that's me!) is responsible for co-scripting, website design, comic art
and Vincent Drakes journals. I refuse to write in the 3rd person any longer! I have no
formal training, unless you count three months in art college, which I soon quit. Halfmoon
represents the culmination of a lifetime's ambition; to draw Vampire and werewolves
fighting. Nothing more grand than that. The main thing any Halfmoon fan should know is
that I have consciously used the comic to show my development as an artist. For example;
Halfmoon episode 1 was drawn with a mouse and was the first thing I ever drew on the
computer, it took me just over a year. Whereas Halfmoon episode 4 (which I'm currently
working on) is being drawn with a lightpen and a wacom tablet. It has taken two months. I
draw artistic influences from such diverse elements as Comics, Manga, the surrealist
movement and Salvador Dali, and the work of visionary art consultants on films such as Syd
Mead (Blade Runner). With Halfmoon, I aim to create vivid, shocking images which will stay
with the reader for the rest of their lives.
Halfmoon: The comic:
Halfmoon is the first of it's kind; a fully realised, pay-per-view, high quality digital
graphic novel which can only be experienced online. Each episode contains between 50 and
70 pages of digitally generated artwork, ten of which can be viewed for free. The rest is
a simple online payment of £3.50, which is done by credit card. We are listed with Secure
Trading (the world's biggest handler of credit card details online) and Barclays Merchant
Services. Halfmoon is intended only for an adult (18 and over) audience only and currently
has a fanbase crossing every imaginable social demographic.
Halfmoon is the tale of a power struggle, centered in an allegorical City. Vincent Drake,
Vampire Highlord wants to invoke a gateway between two dimensions which would give Vampire
kind unlimited power, but has to deal with the impromptu arrival of his sire, the ancient
and insane Vampire King Mettabuddin, who simply wants to fuck the entire planet to death.
Redd and his pack of nomadic werewolves, simply want to live their lives free of
persecution. This would not be a problem if they didn't live directly outside the City,
from which Vincent has banned all of their kind on pain of death. Special Agent Byron
Winters simply wants to do his job and get home to his wife, a simple enough aim until he
is bitten by one of Vincent's proteges and thrown into the middle of a supernatural turf
war. The Japanese warrior and martial artist Li, wants to throw off Mettabuddin's powerful
psychic shackles and go in search of his true origin, after gaining revenge
on his former master. Round and round they go. Who will live? Who knows! Who will die?
Almost everyone!
Halfmoon: The website:
To support the Halfmoon comics, the website offers character Journals which tell the story
of Vincent, Daniel and Jon's lives in their own words, a character Profiles section, a
Links Database of related sites, a discussion board where readers can talk directly with
the creators and a Gallery which shows how the graphics are created as well as showing
many original pieces which do not appear in the comic. Halfmoon is an unique place where
both a free website AND a pay-per-view experience coexist and meld into one.
Among the projects in the pipeline are Halfmoon merchandise (T-shirts, posters and a
original score), new characters to appear in the Journals section and some Halfmoon-based
one shots to be shown for free on the site in the next year and a half.
